If you are engaged in trench warfare, and spray-fire from the hip ..... wouldn't that limit you to only using very shallow trenches? Or did they have to stand on step stools so their hips were above the trench edge?
And since trench warfare was last fought in 1918, how did the AK47 and the M-1 become trench warfare guns?

The M21, around since 1969, can shoot MOA at 800 yards. The M21A5 and other custom M14/M1A derived guns will shoot 0.75 MOA at 1000 yards. That's nothing to belittle! Then again, while semi-autos may achieve accuracy that is good enough for a given task, the bolt action will always be one step ahead.
