I agree with Racalman and would go with the self hosted option (and have done so with Asus router).
With a Draytek down to £100ish I would go with that over the Asus (which was about that much 5 years ago).

You can mess around doing things with a RasberryPi and OpenVPN etc. but that is still harder work than the Draytek will be and will still need work done on the router for port forwarding etc.

If all you need is to access a single camera over an encrypted link, all you need is a router that will do port forwarding (pretty much all of them) and a camera that has a web interface that supports SSL encryption (the standard green padlock stuff you get on your web browser)

No fancy VPN or router required at all. Your data is never unencrypted and provided the camera is a decent one with fairly secure firmware (don’t underestimate the ease of hacking a bad VPN stack on a router...) then you’re just as safe as with a VPN.
