When I said a the chances of a similar incident happening here are slim, I was referring to a licenced, legal firearm owner going on a mass killing spree. Note that you have listed the only 3 incidents in the last 33 years... That I would call slim!

And in, at least the most recent case, a failing of the system allowed him to have access to guns, not the system itself. He had known mental health issues and was being investigated by HMRC. Both of which should have had his licence revoked but police failed to do it. This goes to show that the rules still worked, it was the enforcement of them that was lacking. Since then the rules have been much more strictly followed and this is why I say the chances of a similar incident today are slim. Not zero but slim.
But these mass shootings weren't exactly a daily occurrence in New Zealand either. When applied correctly, the law was adequate. It wasn't applied adequately and now all the law-abiding have suffered.

I'm interested in how you feel the previous NZ firearms laws failed over and above the police not doing their job properly. And how it would be any different to how it could fail here.
You realise you are arguing the same point as me right?? I quite literally said the laws were adequate but the application of them failed. Something which doesn't happen here these days because the laws are applied more strictly.
Those responsible for the debacle , ie the police , didn't accept any blame for their wrongdoing , the ACC from Central Scotland police whose responibility it was to regulate FAC's failed to take action on three occasions , once when the secretary of the club of which he had been a member reported to the Firearms department that Hamilton was no longer a member , had in fact been kicked out . Then again when a visit from a PC , to Hamilton to listen to his complaints that he was subject to harrassment by locals who accused him of kiddy fiddling found that he had a shotgun propped up in a corner . The PC reported that Hamilton was erratic and twitchy and she felt very nervous and reported to her superior that in her opinion he was "unfit " to be in posession of a "weapon" . Asecond visit by an officer investigating claims of "kiddy fiddling" found the shotgun still propped in the corner and once again reported that Hamilton was unfit . Nothing was done , the ACC in question was allowed to retire on "ill health " grounds and vanished . All this was reported at the time but then disappeared during the enquiry which whitewashed and hid the guilty for 100 years !

His name is McMurdo and went to live in Australia when he retired. He personally intervened in Hamilton’s favour. An ACC intervenes? Hamilton’s application had Lord Robertson as a referee as well!!

No wonder conspiracy theorists get excited...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

We used to have a bloke on here who had been mates with Hamilton, if memory serves. Took a load of flack about it at one time. Referred to him as “Tommy” and try to paint the picture that he was a troubled, misunderstood soul. I suspect there was a deep rooted and possibly unnecessary guilt.

We know a lot of mistakes and poor judgements made in that case, but there’s only one person to blame. That murdering ba$tard Hamilton.

No, it wasn’t on here. It’s when those of the “Old Guard” were on GT.

Yes it was on GT, a pity as he could've been useful for providing more information on the subject. Unfortunately people on high horses ran him out of town 8-)

If memory serves it was his defence of Hamilton that people had a real issue with.

I only remember people taking exception to the poster referring to him as 'Tommy' rather than him saying anything in his defence, but then my memory capacity is outmatched by an Amstrad 464.... lol
