I dont think you just ask for 7.5 then choose from a few, in our area. I asked for a variation for 7.62 thinking I could go for x51 or x54r or x39. I was told I had to pick and apply for the one I wanted, ie 7.62x54r. Is this not the same for everyone ?

This subject came up quite recently BNZ, it is the same for us but apparantly some areas accept 30 calibre on the variation so you have a choice of everything from 300RUM down.

Hi ovenpaa.
Thanks for that, as Tower.75 is in the same county as us I assume the same rule will apply. I await the update from tower with interest..

I'm on my ipod at the moment and don't have all the details to hand. The FAC paperwork spefically asks for calibre and the recommendation from BASC is not to put down a specific cartridge.

Yup, watch this space. I'm going to apply for my two 1-4-1s this weekend. I'll keep you updated about whether I can just put 7.5mm and 8mm

When applying for my FAC, I originally put down 7.62/.308. I was told it had to be one or the other (d'oh!) so chose 7.62. So I could get a x39, x51 or x54R. Strangely, I can buy 7.62 and .308 ammo, even though when I get my 7.62x51 I won't be shooting .308 ammo out of it!

At least we can get away with 7,62x51/.308 on our FAC's in Bedfordshire. As ever there seems to be a distincy lack of commonality from county to county.

It seems BASC has slightly changed the wording of it's advice, as I remember it.
http://www.basc.org.uk/en/utilities/doc ... 6DEB7A38C2
It now reads
Calibre. The question asks for the calibre of rifle/pistol/shotgun, not for the name of
the cartridge. For example .308 & .223 rather than .308 Winchester or .223 Remington.
However due to the complexity of ammunition development, it is advisable to list the
specific cartridge designation e.g. .17HMR or .17 Remington as the difference in
performance between these two examples differ greatly, one is rimfire and the other is
centrefire. The police need to deal with the application with regard to the specific
ballistics of the cartridge e.g. for land checks and to ensure that what is applied for is
appropriate and in some cases conform to secondary legislation i.e. the ballistic
requirements contained within the Deer Act.
Advisable but not necessary. In any case it is still worth a try.
For the record my Ishapore is a .30, my Destroyer is a 9mm, and my rimfires are .22. Plus I have authority to purchase a .22CF. All calibres no cartridge desinations. I specifically asked for an 8x56R, .303, 357/38 and I have no choice but to specify a calibre (.36) for a ML pistol.
HTH.
