The Japs are also pretty good at producing glass you know. People knock 'em but I compared my Nightforce 5.5-22x56, set on 8x, to my old Schmidt 8x56, and there was nothing to tell them apart, even in low light. My Nightforce has the benefit of a boat load of adjustment and being very very solid.

Blu wrote:OK I just spoke to a fella in Leupold tech department. Their Bino frames are indeed made in China although the glass is made in Japan. All glass for their scopes comes from either Japan or Europe and is produced to Leupold specs. All rifle scope frames and other parts are made in their machine shops over there in Beaverton, Oregon.
That's exactly what the man said.
And that'll do for me! Cheers Blu!

Riedel

Scmidt versus Nightforce and solidity? Some years ago I was climbing into a high seat with a sporting rifle sporting a "German" Schmidt and Bender, 6x42, I believe. The floor of the high seat was very greasy, which, combined with my carelessness, caused my rifle to slip and crash to the floor. On picking up the kit I noticed that the composite Sako stock was chipped. Subsequent testing of the rifle revealed that the zero had not changed whatsoever. This spoke volumes for the reliability of Schmidt and Bender. So far I have not tried the same trick with my Nightforce 12-32x56. And also, what's wrong with Swarovski?

In my opinion the NF should not be compared to a S&B as they are for different purposes. I run a S&B PMII and a Nightforce BR, there is no comparison. The Nightforce glass is not in the same league, the build quality is inferior and S&B generally feels nicer to use. The NF is at best a weak alternative. Fair to say I am biased as my preference has always been single turn turret milrad 'scopes.
A worthy alternative to the S&B glass wise is the IOR and the Kahles, both use the same glass but with different coatings.

I have a Kapps here, great glass but not sure who's it is. Possibly SCHOTT again?
