We might be talking about a different chap here, I believe the case mentioned by the Sportsmen's Association, was a guy who got a suspended sentence, he was a Cowboy reenactor who used the front venter for popping balloons..
My adavice would be, if anyone has such a beast, surrender it to a Sec5 dealer for disposal, at the very least, it will cost you your FAC.

How do I stand regarding my old potato gun I bought from Woolworth's as a schoolboy?
You press the barrel into a potato, forming a small slug, then it is propelled by one of a series of 'caps' on a paper reel.
Should I see if I can get a section five for it?

I nearly fell foul of buying one of these in 2000 in Spain, thankfully I invested the money in Jack Daniels the night before so couldn't afford it

And what about trouser snakes? They are forward venting and fire a multitude of noxious matter that could easily have someone's eye out.

Not sure, but to be on the safe side you should hand it over to someone who has S5 authority. I have space in my cabinet to accomodate it.
