I can understand doing that to a Lee Enfield, but a Metford, must have had a barrel that was really far gone to make it worth smooth boring.

Someone once told me the strike marks on the stock related to barrel defects or something, it had three strikes on it. Lovely gun, wouldn't sell it if I had it again!

Barrel is still 7.62x53/4 just smoothed. Its as sandgroper said one of those left overs of days when more stuff was section 2 before the great kneejerk of 88. I've seen SVT-40's rechambered to 303 though in Canada.
