Indeed, I was well aware of that.

This is from the original consultation document:
"We are also proposing to prohibit ownership of rapid firing rifles, such as the VZ 58
Manually Actuated Release System (MARS) rifle, which can currently be purchased by
anyone who has a firearms certificate authorising them to possess a centre-fire rifle in one
of the relevant calibres. While a rifle of this nature is capable of a rapid rate of fire, there is
uncertainty about whether they can or should be defined as a self-loading rifle of a kind
already prohibited under section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968 because a second pull of the
trigger is required to discharge a round. Nevertheless, the rate of fire is significantly
greater than a conventional bolt-action rifle and recognising the intention of the Firearms
Act to prohibit civilian ownership of semi-automatic firearms and the risk that they would
pose if they were to get into the wrong hands, we consider it appropriate to subject rifles of
this type to the controls of section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968."
But as to where the initiative originated to look at them, that was very obviously from outside the Home Office.

Re: Attention all MARS & Lever release owners
There is a post on facebook from the NRA asking any owners of mars or lever release rifles who purchased them on the grounds as being suitable for disabled shooters, to contact Iain Robertson.
Apologies if this has been posted already.
In addition in the second reading there was reference to attempts to smuggle high muzzle energy firearms into the country. I’ve done my best to google such stories but the smuggling attempts i can find are confined to pistols and Ak style firearms.
There seems to be no evidence or reasoned link between smuggling attempts and ME of 13600 joules, has anyone seen anything, just putting together another letter to my mp in respect of comments made in the second reading.

Well, at least they're trying to do something about it but they should have done that long before now. They are just too reactive.artiglio wrote:There is a post on facebook from the NRA asking any owners of mars or lever release rifles who purchased them on the grounds as being suitable for disabled shooters, to contact Iain Robertson.

The only reference I have heard is what Victoria Atkins said in the House on Wednesday:

I can't post the quote as I keep getting an SQL error for some reason!

Re: Attention all MARS & Lever release owners
Given the strong concerns expressed, I will take a moment to explain how clause 28 came into being.
For those not familiar with such weapons they are very large and heavy firearms that can shoot very large distances.
One example I have been given is that they can shoot the distance between London Bridge and Trafalgar Square—some 3,500 metres. I can share with the House the fact that there has been a recent increase in seizures at the United Kingdom border of higher-powered weaponry and ordnance. The assessment is that those weapons were destined for the criminal marketplace, and that the criminal marketplace is showing a growing demand for more powerful weaponry.

Re: Attention all MARS & Lever release owners
I had to type it in manually. Very odd as I had copied the text from Notepad which usually strips any odd characters out.
So for the sake of clarity, that last post of mine above was a quote from Victoria Atkins on Wednesday!
Anyway, I was than going to say that I doubt any .50cals have been attempted to be smuggled. They could be talking about anything from a hand grenade to a mortar really. It's just bluff and we won't get the truth out of them.

Thanks for that, i’ll stop trying to find any reference online. I doubt my MP will follow of the links i’ve provided but none refer to firearms with muzzle energies greater than that achievable by a 308 win target rifle ( at least as far as i can determine).JSC wrote:I had to type it in manually.
