I note that the Government argues that its proposed measures are based on evidence from intelligence sources, police and other security experts

Could these be the same "intelligence sources" that said a certain middle east gentleman had WMD's ?

Or is it the "intelligence sources" that downgraded the Manchester bomber as a suspect in the months before the Manchester attack .

I think we should be told .

"Intelligence sources" rarely have any intelligence - just spouting what they're told to spout, irrespective of how silly or contrived it all is.

Why do we need to personalise it?

Both the guys from BASC and CLA say 'well I dont' and 'I do'.

It doesnt matter what they do personally its about their membership and the wider market. I appreciate you cant know everything about shooting but least enough to represent the different types on such an important matter is not too much to ask?

I find this all incredibly frustrating, it appears that once again legal owners are being held responsible for the illegal activities of others - 39 rifles and 165 shotguns stolen so far this year...

So 204 in 7 months, less than 1 a day? and none of those were .50 or MARS, in fact, only one .50 has ever been stolen and that was recovered not used in a crime?

There are 1,936,915 legal firearms and shotguns out there (including dealers stock?) so that is 0.01% lost or stolen? not even 1% or even .1%. No detail on if any were used to hurt others.

Compare that to vehicles that are stolen or illegally possessed and involved in fatal or serious injury RTCs.....

Rising violent crime is very damaging for politicians. Catching violent criminals is very hard and dangerous work.
However, with a largely stupid electorate, useful idiots in the press, and some meaningless legislation that appears to be 'doing something' (at least to the hard of thinking) there's a reasonable chance the public can be fooled for another year off the back of this. A year's a long time in politics; they hope some other distraction (like the fumbling Brexit mess) will distract the public from noticing that the crime stats continue to rise despite punishing law abiding shooters. After all, people are still moronic enough to think the handgun ban worked.
