The other two were letters - makes it harder with a choice of 26 rather than 10!

However, it was my stewards job to remember details! :55:

A few years ago as my Grandfathers alzheimer's grew worse, one of the few things he could remember clearly was his Service number from his RAF days. If you really served in the armed forces it is the one piece of information you should be able to instantly recall.

All this stuff about service numbers is what worries me, I start in a few months and numbers have always been something I suck at remembering, I even had to make a note of my pin number on my phone...
and that's only 4 digits.....
Ah well I guess it becomes second nature after a while?

Yep I can believe that, it's seems to be the one piece of information burned into the brain.

Don't sweat it mate, you'll get it. You'll find that during basic training you'll repeat and write your number so many times it'll be permanently etched into your brain. Once learned never forgotten. You're going to have a great time and make a few lifelong friends. 30 years after leaving the Army I still talk to a couple of old Army mates on Skype every week.

In my 40 years of service I have had 3 service numbers (served in two different armies) and I can recite them all from memory (naturally). My Dad remembered his WWII service number until practically the day he died at 90. Anybody who claims they can't recall their service number, you can be sure they never served.

Now PIN numbers, that's a different story. Those I have a hard time remembering!

DaveB, just out of interest mate, which two armies did you serve in? I new a fella who went absent for five years then turned up at the Bn guardroom one day. Turned out he's buggered off and served with 2 REP of the Foreign Legion, had his discharge papers and all to prove it. Surprisingly the Army didn't boot him out, IIRC he did 56 days and soldier on and finished his time in the Army. They also let him wear his French wings on his uniform as well.
