Prior to any judgement/ruling/order from the EU, we inform our own government that we will not abide by such a ruling that has been made in a foreign country, by foreign politicians, in response to a terrorist action, the repeat of will in no way be prevented...

I seem to recall reading elsewhere (I've long since lost the link) that someone in the know reported that after the handgun ban and subsequent handovers that rather than being destroyed the firearms were placed in secure storage indefinitely. Apparently the government of the day was concerned that what they had done - the confiscation of legally owned property - might be found to be illegal under Art. 17 Right to Property - the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Apparently they held on to the ill-gotten gains just in case they were required to back pedal because they could not properly show the seizures were in the general interest, the illusion of safety not being a sufficient reason.

It was a persuasive read at the time. Certainly an angle shooters should explore by clubbing together in order to lawyer up and mount an action were a repeat to happen.

Yeah right that's going to happen 8-) Nah too much of the it doesn't affect me attitude. If you don't think so then just ask people like Yardley and his pals in the tweed and wellies brigade to get behind it and see how it pans out.

I think that is urban legend, I know for a fact that my pistols along with all other handed in to A&S were cut up as I knew the armourer who had the job  Maybe other forces had a different policy but I doubt it.

I know Met Police did hold them in storage for a while while they were sorted and then they were transited in a secure convoy and cut up. (Somewhere in Kent I believe)

My uncle and police escort watched all avon and Somersets pistols once chopped with a bansaw, go into a melting furnace of liquid metal......the end....

I brought up the subject a few years ago that it was rumoured that Scotland had retained the handguns in case of possible appeal/s, but Sim seemed to think otherwise. I'm inclined to believe Sim's info correct. :good:

There will be a mad rush to PC world when this is all over to replace worn out key boards, namely the Y-A-R-D-L-E-Y keys .... among others... ! lol

"tweed and wellies brigade" Don't forget wearing a natty hat at a jaunty angle, another clear sign!

Now I don't know about handguns, but I believe (second hand info here) a number of the standard spec AR15's from the 1988 ban, went to the MOD ..

It was also rumoured that at the time of the hand in(s) that some people not wanting to part with a cherished gun simply obtained a similar de act version, changed the ser. no. and handed that in instead.

A bit dodgy if you ask me, the thought of even one night in nick terrifies me, never mind five years. :o

I had already done half the job(destruction) for the police before I handed mine in. ;)
