To be honest ooman, the ole stock isn't really fit for much other than firewood. If we replace it, it's definitely availabubble for intercountynental travel.

Another suggestion has just been made: how about retaining the existing barrel and, if possible, rechambering it to fire 7.62x39 ?

Might it be possible? Or is the ability to rechamber from 7.62x51 to x39 stretching technology too far ? Are the bullet diameters compatible ?

7.62x51=.308
7.62x39=.311
I don't know enough about rifling barrels to answer your question.

Hmmm, if our barrel is actually .308, we wonder if the Swiss 7.5mm round is a contender simply by having the chamber re-cut.
