Can someone find me a stastic showing how many bolt action rifles are used in commiting a crime or DB shotguns for that matter. Maybe in the past the DB shotgun was the gun of choice for bank robbery.

This obsession with removing parts and locking keys in keys safes whose keys are then swallowed is getting ridiclious!

I only have a Rem 700 and No 4, so easy enough to remove both bolts and keep in the separate ammo locker.

I have on two occasions though driven a mile then had to pull over because i couldnt remember sticking the bolts in my carry case.

Did worse than that had my shotgun in its case ready to go clay shooting ,also had my marlin 38 in a similar case all locked in my safe ready .Left early to go clay shooting the next morning in a rush picked up a case and left .
Strange they wouldn't let me clay shoot with the marlin

We drove right across a rainy Jutland one day only to have a sudden moment of panic as we arrived at S&L. Luckily I had the bolt in the pocket of the bag...

i leave the bolts in and a mag although i do take the moderator off (the mags are empty)

I wonder do the police remove their MP5 bolts to make them safe for storage? maybe they take the slides off their glocks and keep them separate to?

How many people bag everything up the night before and leave it on the bedroom floor ready for a very early start?

Or more to the point how many people are prepared to admit doing this? :D
I cannot tell a lie, I have done similar but I have a ready-use cabinet in the garage (integral) that I pop the rifle into before driving off early. The car will be loaded with all the other essentials the night before.
Apart from my Semi .22s and my M14 straight-pull all other bolts are removed & stored separately.
As for turning up at the range without a bolt. guilty!

Charlotte the flyer wrote:Sorry to dig up this old thread. Can I confirm my understanding of the following rifles as I want to remove my bolts to try to free up some cab space:

No4 Enfield, cocks on closing so the bolt can be removed and stored as is.
Yep. Bolt can be "de-decocked" by turning the cocking piece anti-clockwise, at which point the striker protrusion shows at the bolt face. There's very little tension to release and restore it so you can do it by hand.

Also works for SMLE, No.5 and No.8 rifles.

I keep my rifles with the bolts out and in the ammo safe, only way I can fit all 6 in the cabnet

I only have a Mosin Nagant Sniper that has a removal bolt, it is locked away seperately in my ammo safe.

I've never understood this thing about removing bolts from rifles for storage. I suspect it originated with over enthusiastic FEO's way back. When I had a L1A1 and an AKM it was never suggested that I dismantled them and store the working parts separately. And why just bolt action rifles, do any of you remove the working parts from lever actions or .22 s/a's or remove the cylinders from BP pistols? If somebody wants to take your firearms it's easier to force their way in while you are at home and threaten you personal violence to get you to open your secure cabinets.
