So what was the outcome of this thread - smokeless (nitro) powder must now be stored in a wooden box?

While some randomer at BASC might have a personal view, that's not what the HSE guidance says and it does explicitly include smokeless powder in its definitions.

Haven't seen anything to the contrary. Is a kitchen cupboard, made of chipboard stuff that kitchen cupboards are, could that be defined as a wooden box?
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I think the outcome is that no one has or will be prosecuted for using common sense.

Oh.. And any wooden box will do.

Quote my feo:
"i'm phoning about your explosives licence"
Me: "yes"
"have you got a wooden box"
Me: "yes"
"ok"
Me: "where should i put the box?"
"in a cupboard"
Me:" ok"

Storage boxes for Nitro powder??

#64 Post by 20series »

Have I missed something?

Just seen something about new legislation, all Nitro powder now needs to be stored in a wooden box the same spec as Black Powder,

anyone else aware of this??

I think not.

I seem to recall this misinterpretation has been around for a while, in fact I'm sure it has been discussed on here before, a search might be in order.

What is your source?

If the conditions have changed then it seem to be a very well kept secret.

This document was sent around to all members of my club... i've included the relevant sections

----------------------------------------------
H&SE, Explosive regulations 2014: Storage provisions

Appendix 7:

Section 2: Shooters powder includes both black powder and smokeless powder

Section 5: The containers of powder should be kept in a box constructed of plywood with a minimum thickness of 18mm and a maximum of 24 mm
------------------------------------

I'm not sure what misinterpretation can be had from that.....although there are some conditions about "separation distance requirements for keeping small quantities of shooters powder...." that may be a loophole...
