I'd like to see someone go on the AKfiles forum and tell the Yanks they've all got pretendy AK's!

What amuses me is the huge magazines that these guys have with a sort of inserted section full of tiny .22s. They are imitations: they are not ARs which are gas operated full/semi auto rifles. Excellent for posing with and probably a substitute for viagra. Rifles should be made of steel and walnut, not plastic and aluminium.

The rimfire AR evolved from a military trainer, the magazine size was kept to replicate everything as closely as possible to the full bore version.

Wood can be good...

Fred do your research, the reason the .22lr Mags for AR15 / Spikes / Lantac / CMMG are so "Huge" is that you can change out the upper for a 5.56 / .223 /9mm upper meaning one trigger job / butt stock / grip etc

Actually, I have something a little different to throw into the mix..................

I think that ( shock horror ) Dromia may be mistaken when he believes that owners of non semi auto rifles are incorrectly referring to them as AR rifles.

For 2 reasons -

To explain - the English language is constantly evolving and sometimes a brand name can become a generic name. A good example is the vacum cleaner becoming known as a "Hoover". The term AR can now be accepted as having become generic in the same way. The term "AK47" too, in that it is used to cover a wide variety of Kalashnikov rifles better termed AKM, AK74, AK 100 series etc

Further - The AR is just an evolution of the M16 which also evolved into the M4. Once upon a time only one manufacturer made the "AR" and it only came in a limited spec option list and only 2 calibres. Nowadays, you can choose from any barrel profile, any barrel length, any trigger, flat top or carry handle or even both combined, any furniture combination including LAMINATED WOOD. And you can choose from a huge range of calibres. If you are law enforcement customer, you get to have the 3 round burst fire option. You can have a standard upper / forend or a monolithic setup. You have a choice of gas operation systems.

And the evolution continues - to satisfy some states laws, it is available with a wierd thumbhole type stock which means it does not officially have a pistol grip. Same goes for the bayonet lug. Same goes for the flash hider.

But wait, the evolution continues - in some States, one must have a magazine which is only detachable by means of a tool ( to slow down an illegal user of the rifle apparently )

Now, I would contend that any combination of the above is an "AR". Even if it is in .450 socom calibre, has a 8" barrel, laminated rose wood furniture and a magazine which needs a tool to remove it ! Despite it having very different features and calibre to the "original" AR.

I think it is short sighted and ill informed to opine on whether an AR is an AR based primarily on it being single shot or semi-auto in operation !

And what we have in the UK is just another variant in this long evolution. A different approach to satisfy a different customer base or legislation. The straight pull UK spec .223 AR is just as much an AR as the example I gave above.


Now, having said all that - I note that Dromia spoke about the NEED to use the term "pretendy" being caused by others using the wrong term in his opinion. A sort of "correcting" of the other person I guess ?

But if he feels the need to correct someone he feels has mislabelled his rifle, there are so many other terms he could use - single shot, straight pull, bolt action, UK spec, AR "type", AR "platform" etc etc - I still think it rather curious that he feels that the correct way to counter someone else using a wrong term is to use a made up term "pretendy" !

In fact why the "need" at all ?

I always fancied an AR-7 as a kid.

And looking at it all we have, by talking about a rifle/subject which is close to peoples hearts we have already created the AR section!
Love em or hate em this discussion has run to 8 pages and is still going so all it needs is a section creating and all this moving there.
Maybe a poll is needed to see who would like an AR section? as I imagine there are people saying yes or no to this in there minds but would rather not say out in the open. These people maybe would click a box saying yes or no instead?

Well, it would be the democratic approach...........

I like guns
Some more than others
Some i wouldnt want to own (at the moment but tastes change)
I only need to buy 3 guns this year and thats it (been saying that and doing that for a while )
But i respect that we are all different and we all need to stick together or we will divide and be conquered ........
