So, oomans, for shooting at 300 and 600 m, primarily prone, would you recommend the Howa or the Remington, and in what calibre. We're thinking of 6.5x55 Swedish to have commonality with some of our other rifles but would also be amenable to stepping down to 5.56 if it has clear advantages.

The 700 does not come in 6.5x55 off the shelf and I also believe they have stopped bringing in the Howa in 6.5x55!! (So it is just old stock)

The Howa will be made to much tighter tolerances than the Remington. Out to 600 and .223 will see you wel. Advantages? Dirt cheap to make good quality reloads, target and hunting ammo is widely available, I'd imagine just about every shop in the country carries both and factory can also be reasonable in the pocket dept.

Howa. I like their ambidextrous stocks. There is an action for everybody; I like the stainless stuff . That 10 shot magazine conversion you can get for it, even though it is of no real use what-so-ever in the UK. Build quality is good for a very good price. All you have with Remmington is the name. Can't remember ever seeing a bad Japanese gun.

Or save the sett some money and buy a Weatherby Vanguard 2, it's the same Howa rifle and can usually be found cheaper

It looks as though the Howa (Weatherby) is the one to go for then - assuming they can be dropped into an AICs -x stock. Can they ?

Do AI do AICS/X chassis that accept Howa Actions or are they the same footprint as the Rem700?

No - the Howa action is far removed from a Remmy.

having used a standard Howa in a rapid fire event one year, then with a 10 shot mag the next, I can assure you there is a use for them in the UK

Hmmm, now we just need to find out if a Howa is compatible with the AICS-X stock...
