Musings on the sound of a bullet

Having done done time in the butts at Alcar yesterday (500m)
Listening to .308 .223 and 30-06 coming over my head I've decided that real bullets sound NOTHING like Hollywood bullets ... Why do you reckon that is ... Wouldn't the "public" associate the real noise with what it is ... Are they that conditioned ??

We were talking about this today. The sound of a .308 bullet hitting the sand from 800 yards is quite impressive and certainly not like the movies. Memorable ones include a 300 RUM at 1200 yards, I flinched as the first round hit the sand in front of me. The Vikings 22C at 1000/1200 yards is unmistakable as well.

Maybe not Badger but a 200 grain subsonic bullet from a decently suppressed .308 does make me smile. With luck Matt will pick this up and post a clip of his Steyr HS50 with a suppressor, the sound is superb, it is a whistle a bit like the air brakes on a lorry.

We had fun at Sealand a week or two back, using a very well moderated CZ452 to lob subsonic .22s at the 100 m targets. We had to keep radioning down to the butts to tell them to drop and patch the target, and they kept saying "Nothing has arrived here yet".
In the end we took to shooting the marker disc off its wire so they knew something was incoming...

Oooh, what bullet might that be? Or is it a boolit ? And on what powder?

I think air rifle pellets coming by sound more like "Hollywood" bullets !!

Not that I have any experience, but the start of Private Ryan always seems very realistic...certainly scares the crap out of me...
