About 20 years ago I bought a Ruger 77RSI in .308 for deer hunting in Southern California. I went out two seasons and gave up on hunting around here. Too hilly, too many other hunters, and no time. I sold the little carbine and regretted it ever since.

About a month or so ago I found this one on our California shooting forum. I guy had bought it from a hunter to use to blast surplus ball through it out in the desert. He got bored with it and offered it for sale. I snapped it up. The previous owner had removed the understated Ruger pad and installed a giant recoil pad, lost the front loop swivel, gouged the stock in a couple places, and put the 3x9 scope on it. This is the old model 77RSI with the push feed and tang safety.

I bought a front sling loop and will soon get a fully adustable rear sight to replace the scope which is too much for such a svelte carbine.

It is a great shooter but the trigger pull is very heavy. A trip to the gunsmith is in store sometime in the near future.

Thats a really nice rifle, I like the look of the mannlicher stock.
I drew a deer tag finally for the 2nd year in a row this year. The terrain is hilly, rocky and rugged here and with this being a dry year (again) I had no luck at all. There are deer in A.Z. both whitetail and mule deer though it can be difficult to get close enough to one to fill that tag, more likely to hit one driving home.

Hills don't bother me much but around here it is steep canyons with dense chaparral brush that is impossible to move in. Northern California is better deer country. The deer population is declining in CA due to the explosion of mountain lions. Probably next on the no hunt list will be deer since the mountain lion feed on them.

I love thje RSI! I once knew a bloke who had a version in nearly all the offered calibers...... Yeah, he was a little obsessive.

I took the scope off and mounted a nice peep sight in its place. The sight drops right onto the existing integral scope mount on the receiver. The carbine is really handy now! Can't wait to sight it in this weekend.

Looks lovely. With a bit of TLC it will do very well.
