Fancy building something like this myself for hunting but side charging obviously.

But why? In an ideal world, you first shot should be sufficient to cleanly and humanely bring down your quarry. You may sometimes need a follow up shot for a variety of reasons. If you need anymore than a bolt action rifle can hold (4 or 5) then you should give up hunting. Just because you can doesn't mean it's right.

Also, consider this, you are spotted by a member of the public with a bolt action rifle, might not be a big deal. Get spotted with "an assault rifle" and I see a world of pain coming your way from the police etc. Remember, the general public don't understand guns or shooting!

Apart from thinking they look really Fugly I'd have to say why not?.

Using a side charging rifle with a 10 round mag is no different to using a bolt action or Blaser straight pull with a 10 round mag, having ammunition available more quickly than having to reload a 3 or 5 round mag doesn't mean a responsible shooter with respect for his quarry (and if you're not you really shouldn't be shooting live quarry) will use it any faster.

If it is purely down to aesthetics then to be honest Joe Public can go whistle, as long as the rifle and calibre is legal for the intended quarry and the shooter is not doing anything illegal Plod can come and look as often as they like.

I agree entirely regarding hunting but it will be side charging single shot for the UK with a five round mag.

With regards to the general public they won't be able to see it because of the camo will they?

Because it's mainly for the North American market and they can. Also, IIRC there are magazine restrictions in a lot of states when it comes to hunting so it's unlikely they'll be going out with more than a 10 round magazine (same as a Lee Enfield). You could also argue that a semi auto is more comfortable for some people to shoot but if you're comparing capacity - then why does any hunting rifle need more capacity than a O/U or SxS shotgun?

I disagree Mike, I take my AR out hunting and it's great, nice and accurate pretty compact. I take a 20rd magazine with me with about 10-15 rounds in it as I know i won't need any more and it does the job. I don’t take it because it can chamber a round quicker than a traditional b/a but because it’s the right rifle for the job and for me it’s multi role rifle; I use it on ranges and for hunting so it kills two birds with one stone (metaphorically speaking)

I understand your thoughts about worrying the general public with the whole assault rifle thing, hence the reason I take 20rd mag rather than the curved 30rd. If they did feel the need to ring the police, I know I wasn’t doing anything wrong so I shouldn’t have anything to worry about apart from someone wasting police time. The firearm is listed on my FAC for use over that land and the police (and I) have the letter giving me permission to use it there from the landowner. Of course in America they are described as modern sporting rifles .

I must say that my experience meeting the general public whilst out shooting has been very positive (obviously this depends where you are and luck of the draw), if someone spots me and watches me or I bump into them, I take the time to unload the firearm and leave it with my shooting buddy and go and say hello. If I happen to be without my friend I sleeve it (unloaded), send a friendly wave to the person and approach for a quick chat to let them know that I am shooting and I’m aware of their presence on the footpaths etc. This approach has always worked well for me in the past.

I know a couple of guys who use their straight pull ARs for foxing. Also one other guy who uses an AUG with a mod to shoot from his landy.
