Pro-Russia protesters in Slavyansk, in eastern Ukraine, took control of the biggest weapons cache in eastern Europe ... the Volodarsky salt mine holds an underground collection of at least a million firearms ranging from first world war heavy machine guns to Soviet-era Kalashnikovs ... The Soviet government first started gathering arms in the mine in 1957, creating a storage facility with lockers of weapons almost 150 metres beneath the ground ... The weapons included first world war sabres, German rifles and even examples of the horse-drawn machine gun known as a tachanka ... the cache also held a large number of Kalashnikovs brought there in the 1990s from all over eastern Europe.

I read an article about the German Army stockpiling a load of rifles including Danish models in some mines just into Germany toward the end of WWII, apparently the US Army heard of the stockpile and blew the front of the mine up effectively sealing them for ever.

Anyone got a shovel and fancy a Danish Krag or two?

There are hundreds of places like this across the former Soviet Union.I know a chap who goes hunting in Eastern Russia a few times a year and he was shown four warehouses each to size of your average B&Q that were full to bursting with 54r and x39 ammunition that were in the middle of nowhere with just a couple of guards that were only to quick to flog a couple of crates of 54r.

I literally ACHE to wander around those caches. I expect you'd never stop reeling in awe at some of the gems you'd find.
