Been banging on recently about how my Marlin 1894C 38/357 is so reliable, when it stopped working.

The cartridge lifter wouldn't stay up and allow rounds to be fed into chamber.

Seen discovered why. The lifter has a small spring loaded detent, (See Photos) which holds it up, mine was missing not to be found.

Now! Marlin doesn't supply this part separate you have to buy the complete lifter costing £60 from http://www.marlinspares.com (Great service BTW).

Don't imagine it would be hard for somebody with a Lathe to turn them out, it is held in place with a crimped washer, if it had a groove it could be retained with a E clip.

Don't know if other Marlin models have a similar arrangement.

Would be a good money spinner for somebody to turn them out.

Never seen one of those come out before and I have a Marlin or two....!!

It happened to me a few months back, on a Marlin .357 with only 6K rounds through it. Took me ages to figure out what was wrong.

I bought a new carrier, and then a kind member at my club who had heard of the problem gave me a spare pin and clip (don't know if he made them, or had spare OEM versions). Put them into the old carrier, reinstalled it, and so far (1,500 rounds or so later) it is still going strong.

I have kept the new carrier, though -- never know when one might need it, esp. since they get grooves worn into them over time, which can prevent operation.

That's what a lot of Club members are saying, and not much mention on the Marlin Forum.

I'll have a talk with a few people I know with a Lathe and see if they could make this part, just in case..

U can weld a star clip on it and itl stay in for yonks....

I have an 1894 and when new I got the parcel off the postman (because we could back then) opened it, racked the action and the detent fell out with a bent spring and washer still in the action. Not even a round fired and it was club range day as well. sign01
Fixed it up and it has worked fine for over 20 years until last year, it happened again but this time I couldn't find the small bits.

Got a new style lifter from Brownells for about $70. When it arrived I made sure the washer wasn't going to come off before I assembled it.

...it IS a good little earner

My mate in Edinburgh rebuilds the carriers on Marlins...has done so for a while now & is well known for it on the Gallery Rifle circuit.
A few of the Scottish based forum members have benefited from his skills with a lathe

Saddler - Thanks for the Info. Despite having mega rounds through it I never experienced the Marlin Jam.

Since new though, I smeared the bottom of the carrier with Moly Grease, maybe that stopped a groove from appearing.

We have somebody in our club (Shandon) who can fix the Marlin Jam. Thanks anyway.

knewmans - Thanks for that link, wish I had seen it before I bought a new lifter, maybe send for the plunger kit along with the one piece firing pin as spares anyway.
