Mike, it depends which Rem 700 and which Hogue stock you have and if the stock has the aluminium pillars. For instance the Rem 700 Police model torques differently as opposed to say a 700 SPS model.

Should have mentioned that sorry. Its a Remington SPS Tactical model. The factory hogue rubberised stock has the metal pillars.

Torque settings are between 40 and 65 ftlb for action screws. I tend to do mine around 50.

For the model you have Remington recommend a torque value of 35 inch pounds although personally I have mine torqued at 43 inch pounds and it shoots perfectly and is very accurate. A little tip is to torque the back screw to 35lbs, shoot a couple of rounds and see how it groups. If not grouping so well then torque it up incrementally until it groups fine and you are happy with it.

Now I'm not disagreeing with anyone here but the 65 inch pound belief has ruined more rifle stocks and killed accuracy quicker than anything I know of, actions and stocks are all different and vary from rifle to rifle. I've had friends rifles that have grouped okay (ish) but for what they were they could have grouped better and should have done, turns out that they have done a trigger adjustment or some such thing on them and have torqued it back up way too tight when putting it back together because they've been told this or that and then it's thrown the accuracy all to hell and they can't understand why.

Here, you have two different opinions and I would say try them both and see what works best for you. Hope you get things sorted out to your satisfaction.
