Anybody with any experience of one of these , shoot well ?

I wouldn't shoot one (or be near one being shot) if you paid me.... In my mind the remy 700 action is simply too marginal to deal with the bolt thurst and pressure a hot lap mag load can create.

I'm not saying it won't work fine with a standard .338 load, but if you're pushing the velocity a bit or simply shoot a reasonably hot load in hot (or very wet) conditions and the pressure spikes, there isn't really anything left structurally in the action. As I mentioned before, the LM's almost stupidly strong case design, means that it's WAY past max. sammi pressure, before it starts to show 'normal' pressure signs on the case.

Personally I'd stick with the AI, TRG or similar proven designs.

Kirby Allen has a fair bit of experience with the LM case and remy .700's, he has written about it several times including here:

Many years ago when I was researching which rifle/caliber to buy, I saw a few rather scary CAD engineering pressure modelling designs of the remy 700 action in different chamberings. I can't recall if it was on VarmintAl's site, Lutz Mollers or another one; but they illustrated my previous point rather well.

Apart from that, just have a look at the bolt face of a remy 700 in .338LM and the rather small amount of material supporting the case head and the size of the lugs really doesn't inspire confidence....

Just considering the backthrusts:
The action was primarily a .308 bolt face.
Then came the Magnums = increase of some 25%
Now comes the .338 = increase of 55% as compared to .308 rear surface.

Considering the bolt dimensions and material quality, Is this not nearing the safety coefficients?

The first .338LM I ever shot was a Remington 700 and the bolt looked scarily undersized, having said that the TRG42 bolt at 19,0mm is not exactly massive.

I've had a look at the rem. For a 'custom shop' rifle, the muzzle thread was poor, the crown was as rough as a badgers arse, the bolt looked no bigger than my 222 tikka, and had file marks on it, the finish was cra*, and generally a bloody horrible piece of poo.

Deposit down on a brand new TRG 42, pick up when my redundancy money comes through. :)

The Rem 700 is 17,7 and the metal quality of the Tikka is also vastly Superior .
