Countryside Alliance executive chairman Barney White-Spunner said: “We had a helpful and constructive meeting in Downing Street to discuss the ACPO Firearms initiatives and their proposed Crimestoppers campaign.

“It was acknowledged that there are various issues that need to be addressed and the Countryside Alliance and ACPO agreed that we would work closely together to resolve them.

“Chief Constable Andy Marsh [the ACPO lead on gun licensing] and I have subsequently agreed a letter to all firearms licence holders which informs them that there will no longer be a specific firearms licensing Crimestoppers hotline number; that presently there is no evidence of legal firearms users being involved in terrorism and that that all the home visits to check firearms security will be largely intelligence led.

If only everything could be negotiated properly, then perhaps we'd still have some that has been taken from us...

If we had social media back then maybe things would have been different, the CA campaign seems to have had an effect, but how many wrote letters (pen and paper!) Back in '88 & 97?

Mass communication via email certainly seems to have some effect on the MPs at least.........

Does anyone know if the CA negotiated this unilaterally or were doing so on behalf of the other "national" bodies and if so which ones.

It's social media like Twitter that's doing it. Govt no longer has the upper hand.

I'm pretty certain it was unilateral. BASC certainly weren't lifting a finger, I know that much.

Still, it's a victory - albeit a small one - for common sense.

Common sense prevailed - or were they getting inundated with bogus calls?
