Still looking for a club :( this is getting silly

Hi all

I've been trying to join a target shooting club for a while. I shot air rifles competitively growing up and then small bore at university but it's been a nightmare trying to get access to a club since then.

Every club I've contacted (both small bore and full bore) within a reasonable distance of South Wales where I live is either incapable of responding to emails, has some ridiculously restrictive rules re. probational membership (if your not best mates with everyone at the club it seems like you've got no chance to even get an invite?!) or has too many people already waiting on probational memberships. So far I've contacted Cardiff Small Bore Rifle Club, Offas Dyke, Dursley Rifle Pistol Club and Worcester Norton Shooting Club with no luck.

If anyone thinks they could offer me at least a look around/probational membership at a small bore or full bore club within driving distance of Cardiff, I'd be really grateful. I'm beginning to think some of the people running these clubs want the sport to disappear when they do!

Taha fingerscrossed

I remember when I was looking, took me ages. First club I went to wanted 2 referees and stated they had to have known me for 2 years at least... I'd only been back in the UK for 6 months and nobody had known me for that long so I couldn't join. Generally the people I met at this club were a right bunch of dicks so I'm better off.

Thanks for the link mate. I'm going to email some of those clubs now.

Yeh this search has been a pain in the arse tbh. The few clubs I have been to in the past (with the exception of my uni rifle club) was just full of sour grapes bitter old men. Very weird.

Thanks again for the link

If you give John Masefield a call at Offas Dyke you may get a quicker response than by email, his number is on the clubs website.A little further afield is Minsterley Ranges/Brookshill Shooting Club, you'll have no problem there, give Dave or Wes a call on 01743 791858.

I've tried calling John at Offas Dyke. I spoke to him once a while ago but he has never picked up the phone ever since! Not sure why it was quite a friendly chat, he offered for me to come down soon and said he'd get back to me with dates etc.

Will try Minsterley although its a 2.5 hour drive from my place!!

Thanks

Since the Olympics shooting has seen a resurgence in shooting as a sport in the UK, consequently there are a lot of people trying to join clubs. I know of a few clubs who are now full and waiting for people to leave before they can accept new members. Also given the renewed interest it is reasonable to expect that references etc would be required in order to ensure that the right sort of people are joining.

Good luck and keep trying to get in somewhere. :good:
