[Nods head in greeting]

Hello, Shooters of the Bore that is Full.
Here within this thread will be my ramblings on the subject of a new rifle recommendation. Your mission, if you so wish, is to assess these words and to then produce for me knowledge in the form of learnin's.

-- I'm currently after a new rifle in either 7.62/.308 or 5.56/.223 (apparently there are other calibres out there that aren't .303), this will be for the hallowed pass-time of "plinking", so nothing too extreme will be required. I shoot at Barton Rd. in Cambridgeshire, normally from 100 - 600 yards but we can and do go back further

-- Ideally I'm looking for something modern - not tactical bull-pup - but something newer than a .303, something black and shiny with the ability to afix a scope. A sporting rifle I assume is the correct term. Not an F-class or Target Rifle

-- I can't decide if I should be looking at a 7.62mm or a 5.56mm. I'm leaning towards the 5.56mm at the moment. Mainly as I have enough .303s so why have a 7.62mm? I want a modern gun that I can just set up and plink with if and when the desire arises. A 5.56mm seems more suited to this - comfortable recoil, cheap (??) ammunition, and a completely different round to what I normally shoot

-- As above, this will be a fun* plinking gun; not to be taken too seriously. Can one be obtained without breaking the piggy bank?

These are the ramblings of the Tower. What sayesth you, friends?

*Are we allowed to say that?

Remington 700 Police (.223) - std. or LTR model
Mines still ggoing well after two decades...
Mossberg MVP - 5.56 - sort of does the job; mixed reports on accuracy
BMS Arms CAM - 5.56 but marked .223 - nice sturdy rifle. Uses some No.4 parts & M16 barrel/bolt face.

Mate has a nearly new Remington 700 VSSF going at a not bad price....nice tack driver.
(Think I have an old advert on here for it)

Lots to choose from in .223/5.56

I'm digging my R700 in .223 out to 600. It does the job very well.

26" barrel police model with 1-9" twist for the heavier bullets (69gr SMKs)

Shoots better than I do... would highly recommend.

Second hand they can be had for a song...

I say, that's awfully kind of you, Badger. Pray tell, what is this, the free rifle you offer? See, and people speak ill of the Badger folk.

Thank you, gents. Lots of good ideas for me to ponder here. I have been alookin' upon the interwebby-click-click and a I have been finding interesting lookin' rifles such as Marlins and Savages, what's more appealing is that they skirt around the £300 mark.

Perhaps this is worth considering as a viable option?

Now here's hoping the kindly Mr. Policeman/Ms. Administrative Coordinator allows me a 5.56mm authority to acquire. My FAC is currently at their abode. I await with abated breath.

Hope you have asked for and listed it as .223/5.56 as most UK rifles you will be looking at will be .223 Rem

Indeed. I already have a 7.62/.308 slot. I played the same game this time round.
