Best place for NV IR Illuminator

I am in the process of adding Night Vision to my Anschutz 520, the NV comes with a small IR illuminator that sits on top however I would like to supplement it with an additional IR source, where is the best place to mount it?
I am considering either mounting it under the forend however this means I would not be able to use a bipod at the same time which is not a huge problem as I doubt I would ever use NV and a bipod at the same time. The other option is to add a rail to the left hand side of the receiver and mount it there, the advantage of this position is I can better support he forend when shooting semi-rested (Truck windows etc.)
Final option is bin the original IR and fit the new bigger version in its place on the top of the NV however I am trying to keep things as compact as possible.
My concerns are shadows/loss of illumination caused by the sound moderator obstructing the light beam and bounce back of IR upsetting the NV image. Thoughts anyone before I stay up until midnight and lash things to the rifle with duct tape in an attempt to test the locations.
