Through circumstance I am a member of both BASC and latterly the NRA. It seems fairly daft to a be a member of both and as BASC supports only(tell me if I am wrong?) field sports it would seem sensible to drop BASC.

I only shoot target and have no intention of shooting live quarry (but have no beef with others that do) but when speaking to the local BASC Director at a country fair I attended there is a clear indication that BASC as no interest in the type of shooting that I am interested in.

Putting to one side any of the politics and feelings of how well BASC or the NRA are managed is there any gain in being a member of both? I am thinking standing with Boys in Blue, better insurance cover, etc.

I wholeheartedly agree with some of the sentiments in another post regarding the bringing back of pistols that all the UK shooting bodies get their act together and form a federation that puts up a common front for all shooting disciplines to the anti's and Government alike.

There is absolutely no point in being in both especially as one has confessed to having no interest in your type of shooting. They are both discipline centric rather than what is really needed is a gun ownership centric organisation.

Actually the only benefit is the insurance and that can be got at a lot less money elsewhere such as the Scottish Game Keepers.

However as a target shooter if you use Bisley and seek to book targets there in your own right then joining the NRA is advised.

If not then look for the best buy in insurance and put the savings towards guns.

I used to be members of both BASC & NRA, but because of getting rid of my shot guns used for rough shooting (not clays). I decided that as I only shoot paper targets at Bisley now to drop the BASC membership and used the money I saved for ammo and stuff.

I also dropped BASC in favour of the NRA based on my principle discipline, although this was over ten years ago.

Well I firmly disagree. Im in the NRA because I shoot at Bisley. I'm in BASC because they are the only credible shooting organisation with any political sway and the NRA is unable to lobby.
I consider my BASC membership an investment in this sport having any future.

Be aware there have recently been changes to the NRA insurance and I think personal injury is no longer covered.

No doubt due to "shooting themselves in the foot" so many times over the years.....

The insurance PDF from the NRA website still shows personal accident on the list of cover.

I personal injury isn't included for members who are 80+. I am not sure, but this could be an insurance industry standard thing because people get more prone to accidents the more mature they get.

Either way I cannot see we can blame any shooting body, (NRA/ BASC etc), if its not included they are getting the best value for the bulk of their shooters.

So basically under 80 and you get personal injury cover with the NRA and you are correct it is a recent change in the last 5 or so years, previously it was up to 75 irc.
