Unable to pick up the rifle now its in limbo.
So, purchased a rifle privately - this was then RFD from gun shop up north to my local gunshop.
They tell me its ready to collect, so off I go.
When I arrive they tell me the original seller has to fill my licence in - and that I have to post my licence back to the original seller for him to complete then he has to post it back. Apparently ths is a new thing?
What a parlaver...
So rifle is now stuck in the shop.
Only ever bought face to face before so ths was a shock.
Is this correct?

It has always been this way but has been ignored and the process of passing from RFD to RFD with the receiving RFD processing the paperwork has become the norm
There has been a push by aurthorities to tighten this up and has now insisted that the correct procedures are now enforced
Do a search on this site as this was done a few months back

We even have a "Distance Sales" sticky at the top on this very forum that discusses this.

I know it seems like a hassle however well done that RFD, too many just gloss over such details.
Re: Unable to pick up the rifle now its in limbo.
What if you want to buy a rifle from a distant RFD, they send it to a local RFD and you'll pick it up, do you still have to send your FAC to the distant RFD before they can send the rifle?

Your contract is with the original seller not the point of collection.
Re: Unable to pick up the rifle now its in limbo.
Pre '97, this was pretty much how we dealt long distance. Saw a gun advertised in a magazine, contacted the seller by phone and agreed deal. Sent seller your FAC who completed the details and sent your FAC back to you. Then in a separate box, sent your gun to your home address....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Send your FAC to a stranger so they know what you have and your address ER NO. & no guarantee you get your FAC back or gets lost in the post.
I will not be doing that.

You will not be legally taking part in any future distance sales then. if in doubt as for a scan of the sellers FAC/SGC to confirm they can legally possess the firearm or speak to their local firearms team and tell them you have purchased the firearm and explain why you are calling, data protection will prevent them from saying much however I would expect them to jump up and down if the firearm was not recorded or legally held.bnz41 wrote:Send your FAC to a stranger so they know what you have and your address ER NO. & no guarantee you get your FAC back or gets lost in the post.

Yes but will travel to do a face to face deal if it's something I can't live without.
Twice I have bought from distant sellers only to find on collection at my local RFD that the rifle is damaged or not as described so you end up with hassle trying to return it and get your money refunded.
