Thread lock

Hi guy's

There are many types of thread lock on the market,
which one is best for securing the nuts and studs on
a scope?

Which do you use?

Blue. Red is the hardest setting one.

Seconded..... Blue is best and on expensive stuff i would use loctite due to the brand being dependable, although i too would be interested in others views on this.

I may be saying loctite simply as its the best known and all i have ever used.

Green is the hardest....red one softens after some heat is applied...blue will be ok for the scope 8-)

pink/purple (222) is low strength, made to give resistance, not lock. think a liquid nyloc

pink/purple (221) is low strength but locks.

blue (243) is medium duty, general purpose, fast acting.

red (272) is heavy duty, high temp

green (278) is heavy duty, almost twice as strong as red, but takes twice as long to set. high temp

green (276) is heavy duty, stronger than 278, but is also less viscous.

green (270) is heavy duty, permanant locking. so needs heat to break

milky green (290) is for applying to already fastened stuff, as strong as 270, needs heat to dismantle really

then you get 2400 which is a foodsafe version of 243 and 2700 which is the foodsafe version of 270

so I'd say 222, or 243 for you

I've only ever used threadlock on rail and base screws, never had a scope ring come loose ? is it a common problem?

Bradaz, what is the "normal" setting time for Loctite. Just a +/- figure will do, because I'm guessing they're all different(?)

blue is pretty much instant, sub 30 secs, red is a few mins, green is 5 or so. obviously all down to temp of item too.
222 never really goes off, as it's tackyness which holds it.
I think most of them only set when no air is present, which is why less is more is the key here.

Yep, green is the hardest. In case this thread degenerates into "my Loctite is harder than yours", I've got some 601 in my shed. lol

Thank you for the information guys.
It was all the numbers that confused me
and I appreciate the experience on this forum.

Differences in price is only a fiver from the cheapest
to the most expensive so I'll look at getting some 222 or 243.
