Lunchtime and I was skimming 'African Rifles and Cartridges' By John Taylor which originally published in 1948 is still available new as a paperback at very sensible price. Anyway I was reading about the .256 Mannlicher Schoenauer and this paragraph caught my eye:
What must surely be the worlds record bag with any rifle, much less with a small bore is held by the 6.5mm Mannlicher Schoenauer in the hands of Banks, recently retired from the Elephant Control staff in Uganda - three elephant to the one shot! He shot one which fell against two others, and all three of them tumbled over a precipice.
Cracking tale I thought :)

I have taken two Fallow with one round of 6.5x53R at 160 yards.
I had waited ages for them to stop milling about and get a clear shot at one of them. Just as I fired, another literally sprang behind it. I was mortified as I watched the one I aimed at, drop on the spot and the one behind walk a few paces in a circle and drop. Fearing the worst I quickly reloaded and approached but...........the round had done a perfect heart shot on both !

Thanks for that Ovenpaa, I've added it to my Amazon wish list. I have "Dangerous Game Rifles" by Terry Wieland, read it a few years ago before I started shooting rifles so I think it needs a revisit.

I have a 1958 edition, which was originally published also in 1948, of Taylor's "Big Game and Big Game Rifles". I thought that was a fairly comprehensive work on the subject, but he must really have kicked the ar$e out of it to get two books from the same subject!

In former french african colonies, big game hunting was since alwayys not allowed with calibres under 9mm and I think by experiece ir was a sound regulation as much for the game than for the hunter.
