The DC sniper may have used a semi but he used it single shot. To mention him towards the end as part of the criminals using assault weapons, well not very well researched me thinks.

Isn't a sniper per definition single shot? Or am I wrong here. Just when I think sniper I think single shot.

Don't forget the dragunov

And did Carlos Hathcock not use a 50 cal machine gun with a scope on to effect?

Dragunov has a magazine. So single shot.
What Carlos Hathcock did was a bit of an oddball thing to do. Not really a sniper. More a one man war machine I guess.

Your right DM, Carlos Hathcok made a confirmed kill at 2,286 Yards in Vietnam using the .50 Browning with a x10 unertl scope mounted on a bracket he designed. He had a number of confirmed using this set up.
There are many Modern Semi auto Snipers/DMR out there. Including HK PSG1, Barrett .50, L129A1, M14/M21/M24 Also the new US Army M110. That is just the main ones that come to mind, Also including the Druganov that DM mentioned.
The Sniper aims to do the job in one shot. However advantages of having a semi auto Sniper in a multiple engagement senario can literally be a life saver. There was an episode of Future weapons with Mac where he was testing the new M110 Sniper. The main concerns was the stopping power and accuracy. These fears were blown out of the water and the Rifle Performed better then most Bolt actions out there. If I can find the clip on you tube I will post.
