Do I need to inform the police if I change my gun cabinet?

With the help of me great advice elsewhere on here, I'm about to submit my initial FAC application. Currently, the single shotgun I own is stored in a gun clamp. This is what was approvied at my last SGC renewal. In preparation for acquiring rifles, I have purchased one of these: http://www.gdktrading.co.uk/gun-cabinet ... -side-ammo and intend to install it in the same location as the clamp, with the clamp being removed to allow this.

My understanding is that, because secure storage is the licence holder's responsibility, I don't need to inform the police that I have made/ am about to make, this change. I would appreciate any views on this. My current thought is that I will change the cabinet, and drop my FEO a quick email with some pictures as a 'courtesy', but nothing more.

I’d just let them know your new capacity, then they won’t question new guns with no place to put them. Informing your FEO is a good idea, why not.

Plus its nice to take pictures of well fitted cabinets.

They will make a visit to support your FAC application anyway, regardless of whether you have a SGC or not.
There is no legal requirement to inform them when you change your safe.

I would just put a note on the application that a gun safe with a capacity of 8 guns has been installed.
They will have to check it as mentioned above.
You may also want to consider an ammo safe as that looks quite small, unless you have other arrangements.

Thanks chaps. That all makes sense. I installed this yesterday (and a small external ammo safe) so will send the FEO a couple of pictures today as a courtesy and nothing more.

That's what I did.

I changed my cabinet, told the police that I had and that the guns were still stored in accordance with the terms on my licence and sent them a photo.

Job done.

There are about 16 + cabinets / ammo safes in my house.... never had to inform our constabulary when fitting new ones. Occasionally in the past they have asked over the phone if I have adequate storage space. They have not come out to check and the only time they physically see them is when the Certificates are up for renewal.

As I suggested, I sent them an email as a courtesy, to inform my FEO that I had swapped the clamp out for a cabinet. He's the reply I got...

"Good day,

We do have to be informed if a new cabinet/ammo box has been purchased and installed, so have forwarded this to the team who will raise the necessary paperwork for me to come along and complete a security check.

Thanks."

I was very tempted to ask them to provide a reference to the legislation that mandates this but, given that I submitted my FAC application on Monday, I thought it better not to wind them up. Looks like they will be making two security checks over coming weeks. What a waste of time.

It would be courtesy to let them know that there may be a possibility of this happening so as to not waste their time... although they should check paperwork, if you've only just sent it just let the same person know that you've put in an application and a security check will be necessary at roughly the same time if they're willing to wait until that time to save themselves the man hours of visiting twice.

I couldn't help wondering that, if they are so keep to check the new cabinet ASAP, this might even speed the process up. A local mate of mine, also a SGC holder, put his FAC application in at the beginning of June. He only had his visit last week and still doesn't have his ticket. We're both in Gloucestershire.
