Imagine I’m about to buy a new .22lr mod.

I have two slots for rim fire moderators, both currently full, both “NVN” serial wise.

I have two simple questions for our illustrious community.

1. Could I swap a one for one with an RFD, simply hand them a Parker hale and take the new mod.

2. Could I “de-ticket” the Parker hale (it is proofed” and screw it into an air rifle, and take the new one as my on ticket mod?

I await the debate with interest :)

Legal and thus correct answer is no you need a variation for both options.....

I would speak to your FEO and see what they suggest as they are likely to want to employ common sense and minimise paperwork for their office.

The proof mark is not relevant though.

Once upon a time there was a FAC holder who had a sound moderator on his FAC. It was listed as unknown make and no visible number. The FAC holder wanted a new sound moderator.

He simply went to the shop and bought one off ticket "for his airgun". He went home and put the new one on his FAC rifle and immediately destroyed the old worn out one.

So, he still had one moderator and it still had no visible number and nobody was ever the wiser.



Whatever route you take - the sound moderator which was on your FAC requires a slot if you want to keep it - even if on an airgun as it a sec 1 item now. It can not be "deactivated" and reverted to off ticket status - as far as I know, the only way to do that is full deactivation and certifying by proof house. I doubt if anybody has ever tried this, ever !!

so if you had a friend who had been given two parker hale moderators (or similar) for his air rifles but also had sec1 firearms but didnt use the moderators for them how would he stand .

If they are not on ticket then you can use them for the air rifles ONLY

However if you are caught with them on a rimfire rifle without them on your ticket, that's a paddlin'

I would suggest that it is possible to remove a moderator from an FAC. Write to police and say you wish to remove it from your certificate to now use it with your sub 12ft/lbs air rifle. Similar as to how one would remove a Sec. 58 antique they had added to their FAC and now wished to remove again.

Never done it myself, although I have done the reverse before and added an air rifle .22 moderator to my FAC myself. I am fairly certain the process is reversible.
