I grew up on Ian Hogg's fine publications, there were others but those stand out.

A great reference book, I bought mine new in 1973.
Some good companion books would be `Bolt Action Rifles` by Frank de Haas and `Cartridges of The World` by F.C.Barnes.

I have quiet a few editions in my library, good images but a bit short on detail.
I am a fan of W.H.B.Smith's firearms books.

W.H.B.Smith's pistol book is the best there is, but I found the equivalent book on rifles disappointing.
A reference book which is also a good read is: "Pistols: A modern Encyclopedia" by Stebbings and Shay. A great favourite of mine.
