Whitfell, is that the one north of Black Beck up the tops?

If so then it is typical 300 yrd firing point with fox holes and console, pop ups at 100, 200 and 300 yrds to which you can affix your targetry, prone, grass, firing points back to 600yrds. However and this has been an issue the past few times I have been there if the military are on the range to the south of it then their template overlays Whifell which means no one can go forward of the 100 yrd targets, this means if you want to go further back you need to get your targets out before the military get started and be happy with not being able to paste up' till midday or go back to the prone grass points.

Like all the military ranges up here they are getting less and less civilian shooting friendly, I certainly wouldn't bother turning out for a all day 100 yrd shoot. To me the whole point of an MoD range is the ability to back to 600. Other shooting I can get elsewhere more conveniently.

Peatfell is better Dave, there are butts so marking is possible. That's the next range up from Whitfell but it is very exposed on a cold windy day.

Thanks Adam I agree it's getting more and more difficult to get ranges that you can shoot anything over 100 yards in the North East. It would make life a lot easier if Club Secretaries actually communicated with each other over range bookings instead of all scrabbling to book the same ones. Any way what about peatfell that's the furthest away after the new Heron park range is that the same story.

Edit: Thanks Joe you answered my question before I posted it. :good:

The snakes are fine - just basking on the stone wall! Adders of course.
The long walk is still there for the youngest and fittest to do.
