I was recently introduced to the art of pen making by a fellow forum member. I decided to have a go. My first pen.
I have been asked to make some more so to morrow is a Shed day.

Looking good, are you machining the wood section on a mandrel? A stage by stage explanation of how they are made would be interesting :)

Yes the wood is turned on a mandrel.
I used a wood blank cut slightly long. A hole is bored through the centre of the blank. A brass tube is glued and inserted into the blank.
The ends of the blank are squared of up to the brass tube.
The woden blank is then mounted on a mandrel with bushings at bothe ends of the blank. One end of the mandrel is held in a collet the other end is supported with a revolving centre.
I actually used a carbide round profiling cutter in the quick change tool holder to turn the blank. If the blank is tapered you need to use wood gouges.
The wooden blank is finished with sanding paper. Then sealed with a coating of super glue sanded again then cut with shelac and polished.
Job done.
Im in the Shed. To day I am working with Acrylic blanks.
Some of he contents of your scrap bin you sent me are destined to be turned into shiny aluminium pens.

Very good :)

I am mostly in and out of the garden today where it is hovering around a rather pleasant 21C although the CAD machine in the workshop is on and I have been on and off design work this morning.

It certainly is impressive! I meant to leave a comment when I saw it this morning, but we had to rush out before I had a chance.
