My Marlin 1894 has the scope that was on it when I bought it. Its a 4-12x50 which seems huge and has to be mounted too high for good cheek weld. My eyes aren't keen on open sights.
Any suggestions for something smaller, lower and neater.

I used a Simmons Whitetail Classic on my 357 Marlin for many years. This is 3.5 - 10 x 40mm and is about 12 inches long.
I recently replaced it with an old Optimate as it suited my eyes better.

Try a peep sight if your eyes can handle it. I have one on my .44 and prefer it to the scope on my .357.
My scope on the .357 is a Tasco Titan 1x4.5 rare find and a much better scope than they make now. I have had 2 WTC small 1x5
scopes fail on me over the years but they are an ideal size if you can find one on ebay for about £90.

Just like bewildered I've used the same Simmons scope on my Marlin. However, I have to say I prefer the peep sight I use. The rear sight is a Williams aperture sight and the front sight is a Williams firesight, which is a red fibre optic sight. Much better than the original brass foresight.

Horses for courses... Whatever mAg your happy with, the crosshairs with little red dot in the absolute center that actually works outdoors is vetting popular.... For those that can afford it sharwarski does a top of the range one @£1,850.......i must admit its infinitely easier to use on black targets...

Mine has always had a Hawke 3-9x40 on it... fine for Gallery rifle.
However, my Club started an Underlever league earlier this year, for iron sights only, so the scope came off... making me realise how bad my eyes are getting..!!

biggest factor will be what do you shoot with it? Plinking? Gallery comps? distances? Target shapes.
I run a pair of Bushnell 4-16x50 Scopes on both my .44 Underlever and my 10/22 identical scopes.
a little bit light on mag at 50m for x rings especially with the .22.

Not knowing your budget, hard to say, but a 1-8 Vortex Strike Eagle is a good option for a pistol calibre rifle, around £420- XS Sights scope rails are available for the Marlin.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I might try an aperture sight before rearranging everything for a different scope.

Certainly a low power variable or fixed low power. Got a 2.bowl Leupold Scout on the .44 and a Leupold Rifleman 2-7x33 on the .357.
