I am thinking about getting my S&W 15/22 repainted.

what part of it is classed as a rifle?

If I removed the barrel, bolt and trigger assy from it, is the plastic frame still classed as a reciever and so only allowed to be held onto by an RFD? Or could I get it painted by someone?

According to my FLD (and the EU) the upper and lower receivers of an AR-15 style gun are licensable parts so whoever was painting it would need to be an RFD. Either that or you'd have to be present while they did it 8-)

S57 (1D)

For the purposes of subsection (1)(c), each of the following items is a relevant component part in relation to a lethal barrelled weapon or a prohibited weapon—

(a)a barrel, chamber or cylinder,

(b)a frame, body or receiver,

(c)a breech block, bolt or other mechanism for containing the pressure of discharge at the rear of a chamber,

but only where the item is capable of being used as a part of a lethal barrelled weapon or a prohibited weapon.
So, it may not just Pressure Bearing Parts, as is often qouted? What is the definition of frame and body?

Remember, AR receivers are not pressure bearing parts and are controlled.

As per s57, not all component parts are pressure bearing, but the concept is a good rule of thumb.

are there any wood stocked rifles, where the trigger mech is mounted in the stock?

Closest I can think of is pre No4 MK2 Lee Enfields where the Trigger/Trigger Guard mounts underneath the Forend.
