New lad here needing some advice .
I re-load .303 ,7.62 . .577 etc for myself and a friend .
He has given me some RNGC 170g .303 lead bullets and asked me to load a batch for his very early ( and much loved ! ) Long Lee .
Can forumites suggest a powder charge for this .He will normally shoot at 300 yards but occasionally gets enthusiastic and has a go at 600 yards .
The powder I will use is Vit N140 as I have lots of it .
Many thanks
John

I wouldn't use 140 for lead.
Use Alliant 2400 or Viht 110
I won't recommend loads as I have no control over your loading practices (not a criticism).

You might well find what you need on this forum in past posts
Otherwise Lyman's Cast bullet handbook is the place I'd go to

Read Cast Bullet Loads for Military Rifles, it's the second topic post in the Library section.

I do use n140 with cast.
I use a couple of grains under the starting load listed for a 180gn bullet.
I am using a 185gn bullet.
Easily makes 600 and I have no leading.
N120 is also a good powder for cast.

Go to front page an scroll down and click on library.
Have you slugged the rifles barrel and taken a chamber cast of the rifle to ensure that the bullets are of a suitable shape and diameter?

Fill the case to the brim with Swiss No3, black powder. Seat the bullet on top carefully as you’ll be compressing the power underneath. Enjoy.
