Yes, I appreciate that, but I think that the length of the ranges maybe came first, and the 300m discipline as applied here was devised to fit the distance.
I'd say it's very unlikely that a 50mm group at 300m would be achieved with any of the service type rifles shown in the link.
The Standardgewehr on the other hand, used by an experienced competitor, is another matter.

I'm in Switzerland at the moment in the carpark of a 300m range as it happens, the Swiss love their 300m shooting and the rules as to what can be used are pretty specific, on this range its military issue ammo only

They'll go quite a long way if money is forthcoming,. don't they still provide the guard for the Pope?

300m was the “standard” for a long time. Standing, kneeling and prone. It was dropped from the Olympics in the early 70s and the discipline has been in decline because of the unavailability or suitable ranges. The Sierra 168gn Matchking I’m sure was created for this competition.

As an aside, I remember being involved in a conversation with a German guy a Bisley. He said that Europe has nothing like the ranges we have and he comes to the UK just to shoot long range rifle.

In the area of Switzerland that I shoot (Berner Oberland) every village and hamlet had a 300m range, if you wanted more you normally had to blow up something to make space, a lot of the smaller ranges are shutting now, but before feeling too smug about UK shooting there are still a hell of a lot more ranges here than in the UK and those ranges are in constant use by locals in a way I doubt we have seen in 50 to 100 years !
