Looking at getting one of these but the big question is Muzzle Brake or Moderator?

Muzzle brakes can be regarded as "anti-social" when shooting in a line with others. Those to the side of you have the blast amplified, for want of a better phrase, whilst you get the benefit. Moderator is preferred over a brake, but unless you're shooting a magnum caliber in a light rifle, then you don't need either...

where are you going to use it? They are not popular on a lot of ranges ,and if you are hunting with someone else they may not be keen.
Personally I use a £30 brake where I can on the range (dependent on pussies without earpro complaining from 4 lanes away

) as the ability to retain a sight picture is useful, and as every mod I have gives heat haze after a couple of shots (I know use a cover, I do that as well) for hunting it's a mod all the way

I shoot at my club (100m) and MOD ranges out to 600m
Totally agree, Moderator for hunting. This isnt really a hunting gun as it's too big/heavy to be comfortable. Like you, heat haze after only three rounds in my Sako 85 which is fine for the limited number of rounds when hunting.
I get the anti-social aspect, its also about which is going to help "tame" the recoil best.

I found a brake was best at taming recoil. However they aren't fun to be next to. I felt bad for those next to me on firing points so switched to moderators for my fullbore rifles.
If I was shooting alone, it would be a brake every day of the week. Cheaper, no heat haze to worry about and it won't are much length.

You can use a moderator for target shooting as well (Unless the class/discipline forbids it) A sound moderator gives you a little bit more MV, less noise and for some, a reduction in perceived recoil. I always shoot with a sound moderator when possible.

Agreed, as do I these days. I really need to get some covers sorted for my wildcat evos though! Try to help with the heat haze.

Speak to Alison at Wildcat. She can supply them or put you in the right direction

In all the years I have been shooting I have never owned a moderator or a brake.
If I was shooting animals I might cosider a moderater.
What amuses me is watching all these young guys trying to convince each other how there super expensive .22 moderaters will eventually actually help them to be able to shoot a small group at
25 yards.
Yet my 100 year old rifle does it consistenty with iron sights. So how does that work.

What also boils my p is all these go faster shooters with all the whistles and bells on the firing point.
That get-up tight when I blow them away with my Steyr SSG 69.
Arggggggggggggggggggh
I guess its bedtime.
Its time to climb the apples and pears. Stairs.
Good night God bless.
Sleep tight watch the bugs don't bite.
