It has been reported that the gunman used a non lethal gun.

8 was killed, how does that work?

They normally refer to them as "less-lethal" these days. Someone probably got sued for saying it was non-lethal and then someone got killed by it....

Any idea that the "non-lethal" gun was?

The perpetrator used a gun designed to fire non-lethal rubber or plastic projectiles, the university press service said. Such weapons can be modified to fire other ammunition. State news agency RIA-Novosti cited local officials as saying the gunman owned the weapon legally.

Not that it detracts from the awful shooting but it is actually more common for Russian soldiers to be killed in mass shootings in Russia, usually shot by a fellow soldier and it was particularly prevalent in the '90s.

True that, Stalin and the NKVD were dicks to be fair......
