I took the Anschutz to the range this morning and managed some respectable 5 shot groups , there are a couple of groups there that I would say qualify for a personal best , All shot at 25 yds , conditions light rain . I tried out 2 types of RWS ammo the Target and .22 lr Rifle , [GECO ] which I batch weigh .

Not a bad morning despite it being a bit cold and wet .

Good shooting Dave :good:

I like RWS rimfire ammo, my preference in my Anschutz 2013 is RWS R50, it's very consistant from batch to batch unlike Eley.

Salut ,

Great results Dave!!
The Anschutz 54 is pure delight - the only club's gun I use - I am trying to teach myself to shoot it standing with no support, hours of fun and no need for a gym membership :good:

Hi Dave,

Interesting results - the 'target' does look better....

After the discussion about .22 ammo, I thought I'd have a test too: This is a box of Geko shot over two seperate nights using my 54 - bag rested and apperture sights...

The results were inconclusive - The first five targets (going from top left), shot on the first night were much better...so showing the element of human error. Although, it did prove that if I'm doing my bit then the Geko isn't bad at all at 25 yrds....

...I was going to get some 'quality' ammo to compare, but I'm not sure it's worth it, without doing it at 100 yrds with a scope..?

Btw Dave - what scope/magnification is that on your 54?

Hi Dougan ,
Its an Edgar Bros Optimate set at 24x , the ammo issue is all down to what you need it for and how much you can afford to spend , I wish I could shoot better without a scope but then I wouldnt do as well , only needs are to get out 50 yds max , but everything went well today .

Hey Froggy
I tried a few shots standing unsupported today but that rifle is way to heavy , but I do need to start practicing again for a competition in early spring .

That is exactly what every body at the club tell me ... Shooting 100 rounds is very taxing...
The 54 I use has the, I believe, earlier stock with a smaller hand guard which might be a tad lighter.
My aim is to put 10 consecutive rounds in one black visual of the 10 spot target shown by Dougan using the dioptre at 25 yards. I practice with standard blazer which is not the most appropriate ammo for tight groups either. I am very sturborn & having great fun with little money trying ;)
Enjoy !!

So quite high magnification for the distance - I'd like to try that sort of precision with the 54, and will keep my eye open for a suitable scope...

Foggy: I have an Anschutz air rifle which I attempt to shoot standing once a year at our annual 10m competition - I try to practice properly (standing sideways etc.), but quickly give up and shoot it like a sport rifle...and badly  - I admire your persistance :good:

Those are some good groups you won't find much of a better rifle, my dad is currently trying to get 1000-100x by the end of the year, he got his first 100-10x target last week with an anschutz 54

Absolutly love the triggers

Shooting standing up takes loads of practice, a bit like pistol shooting really. This will give you an idea of the dedication required.
