A question for all you clever types......

Not sure if this quite the right place to ask, but here goes.

I have an 1871 577/450 Alex Henry. The fore end of the two piece stock is retained by two barrel bands and a key/lug on the underside of the barrel which mates into a slot in the fore end to prevent movement under recoil.

The problem is that the key/lug has broken sometime in the distant past and the fore end does move.

Now, I am not sure if the key/lug is soldered into the recess in the barrel or whether it is a press fit and I do not want to go digging or drilling at it to find out.

My question is: is there anyway that I can attach metal to metal without resorting to using heat. I do not think that super glue will suffice.................. sign85

If you could fit something around/inside then possibly JB Weld which is an epoxy based material. Any chance of a picture?

Pictures now attached:

Closer examination reveals that somebody in the past has attempted a repair by silver soldering the lug, hence the bright appearance where the break is.

Scratch the JB weld idea. All I would suggest is getting it soldered up again.

solder is the only way to go due to the recoil. What little I have seen the rifle looks a good one

Thanks chaps....solder it will have to be......

AL8.....yes it is a good rifle, lovely to shoot, much better than the Martini-Henry using the same cartridge.
