Hi all

Could anyone tell me what is the maximum distance of the Saiga .223 please?

Are they any good in .223?

And anything else you can tell me would be great as I've a slot to fill (so to speak) and isn't going to cost the earth.

any???? sign92

When I had one (223), I took it out to 600m occasionally - it was more capable than I was! Most of the time I shot it out to 400m and I was quite happy with the results.

If you do get one, check the twist rate - I understand the new ones now are 1in12, whereas mine was one of the early ones with a 1in7 twist barrel.

The AK 47 is a 7.62 x 39 weapon

The 5.56 equivalent is, I believe, the AK 74 or AK-M.

"What is the maximum distance" is one of these complicated questions that depends on what (if any) conditions you are going to impose.

And if you want to know about a Saiga .223 why are you titling this about AK 47?

I have shot with Mikhail Kalashnikov

Iain,
I understand where you are coming from, but the 5.56 AK is the AK-101 (IIRC). The AK-M was a modernised AK-47 and AK-74 was 5.45x39. ;)

Ok my mistake but you know what I mean!

Saiga AK in .223!!!

All I need to know is it's best and maximum distance as we shoot 300, 500 and 600.

Out to 600 does surprise me, in a good way!

I have a 101, only put cheap Barnaul through it. It is a fun rifle, lots of accessories, mags are hard to come by and you are pretty much tied to RUSmilitary with regards to mags and the like.

Still, it turns the heads, especially when you replace the rail / flash / stock etc..

I agree with Sandgroper and Amberdog..use Russian ammo, I got all mine from Pete Lawman.....RG milsurp is a little fussy for it.

And yes it WILL shoot to 600 but get the 1:7 barrel as advised..and have fun with it.

Thanks fellas for the info!

At least now I have an idea what to look for and what ammo they like. That Russian ammo is very cheap stuff to which is a bonus.

To disagree slightly with Chuck, I never tried Russian surplus in mine, but it like the surplus RG. I also found the 1 in 7 barrel a bit fussy with bullet weights - 60 to 64gns was ideal for mine, others have found theirs was happy with 69 SMK bullets. I don't recall anyone with a 1 in 7 barrelled Saiga having any success with lighter bullets, but I'm sure someone will say different!

BTW shoot it with a scope or get a replacement foresight - the issued one is crap!

All in a good fun rifle. :good:
