Re: thoughts on scope?
I would suggest either a Brian Fox scope or a second hand S&B or Leupold/Zeiss or similar.

Re: thoughts on scope?
The Fox offering will make a very good first 'scope and at just over GBP100 they are well worth the money.

even out to 1k?
im guessing the nikko is not recomended?
Re: thoughts on scope?
In scopes, you really do get what you pay for.....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Don't be fooled into thinking you need mega magnification for long ranges. A 25x scope is plenty, even out to 1200 yds, as long as you have the right reticle in it.paxtond wrote:ovenpaa wrote:The Fox offering will make a very good first 'scope and at just over GBP100 they are well worth the money.

I haven't used the Fox scopes but they go to 32x or 40x and I hear the glass is very good for the price.
Re: thoughts on scope?
Hello,
I may be wrong and please correct me if I am but I thought that the Big Nikko was designed and marketed at the Field Target air-rifle brigade therefore there might be a bit of a question mark as to whether they would tolerate the sustained recoil of a .308
A few people in the national F/TR league were using Brian Fox's scopes so they cant be too bad-I did have one on my .308 for a while and it was built like a tank and never played up. the only reason for changing it was that the mil-dot rectile was to thick for target work so the target dot version would be a better option (more difficult to accurately hold-over thou). They are 'Marmite' scopes-you either love them or hate them.

Re: thoughts on scope?
Nikko Stirling scopes are fine for a rifle - depending on the scope model of course!
I was using one myself over the weekend 4-16x50AO Gameking on my Rossi. Yes, do do get what you pay for but at the distances I shoot the Gameking will do me.

Another one to consider is the MTC range. I had a look through the MTC Viper on Sunday at 600m (fitted to a 243) and that was very nice indeed. http://www.mtcoptics.co.uk/mtcScope_Vip.htm

Get one of Brian Fox's 8-32 scopes and put the £295 left over towards an 8-32 Sightron when you can afford it.paxtond wrote:having decided on a savage 12F/tr in .308 its time to find some glass

Before buying, take a look at an MTC Taipan 6-24 x 56. This has a great reticule, zero adjustable target type knobs with stadia lines so you don't have to count the 1/8 min clicks, you can dial in to a known setting. 30mm tube diam. You may need a 20 or 25 MOA rail to get out to 1K though. £284 inc vat.
MTC also does the Genesis, 5-20 x 50. This has a windage and elevation range of 100MOA according to the blurb, so should get to 1K with a 308 easily. 30mm tube diam. 1/4 min clicks (I think) £350 inc vat.
