I don't understand those who have gained the skills and kit to reload .308 then stick to that calibre when the 7mm-08 does the same just better.

Because for a lot of us .308 is the only calibre allowed in our chosen disciplines of TR and MR.

Yes. Not being very competitive (or should that be not having the need to prove myself to others?) I forget about sporting reasons. I am sure Mr Badger just shoots for fun and sett defence. Also you are forgetting that some shoot for sporting (read hunting) reasons and for those 7mm-08 will be as legal for their needs as .308.

Yes, that's one of the things that is worrying us about the 6.5x47 Lapua. Longevity... We propose to be around for as long as we can, cull permitting, and aren't keen on investing out hard earned pennies on a tube that will be burned out afore we are. That's not a problem we can envisage with the good old fashioned 6.5x55 Swedish - our 100 year old Mauser and Krag Jorgensen both still have good bores. As mentioned above, we suspect that for fun shooting and sett defence the Swede will be good enough for us, though we might go and do a spot of research on that new fangled 7mm canned bang somebody also mentioned...

The 6,5x47 is going to be good for at least 3000 rounds however this is very dependant on how you feed it. The 6,5 Swede again is dependant on what it is fed but should last a good time as well. Barrel life is always going to be down to many factors, material, cartridge, load and even frequency of shots. A .284 run hot and shot every 20 seconds for 100 rounds is not going to last as well as a reasonable .284 load shot slow and deliberate.

Christel and I shoot a 6,5-284. Everyone tells me the 139 Scenars have to be shot above 3000fps and indeed they can be pushed to 3050 with ease yet I find they deliver very good results as low as 2850fps, certainly enough to finish on an F Class V at 1200 on more than one occasion. The difference between 2850fps and 3050/3100fps is going to be significant in barrel life.

One thing I will add is if you are going to build a new/custom rifle why compromise on cartridge choice to eek a couple of thousand shots out of the rifle, conversely a custom rifle with an over bore cartridge does not have to be a barrel burner to be accurate.

I will offer something a bit radical!
I have one of the AIA Enfield meets AK47 clones in 7.62 x 39.
I bought it for fun and its certainly that. Surplus Russian ammo at £12 a 100 that is more accurate than my reloads!
I can hit figure 11`s out to 400 yards or so and that is more than what the round was made for.
The gun itself is popular in Oz for slotting kangeroo`s.
An RFD,I think it was Thames Valley Guns,rebarreled/chambered a similar gun in 6.5 Grendel.
He sold it a while back for several hundred pounds and that included brass/bullets and dies.
He has an article on his website with full details.
Check out 6.5 Grendel as a round,it looks very good on paper and can make it to 900 yards.
I have toyed with having this done to my rifle.
However I will keep it as is and aim to get something in 260 remington.

We too own an AIA Enfield in 7.62x39. It makes an excellent Goblinator (TM) when equipped with an AK47 magazine (30 round 'nana or 75 round drum). Out to 300 yards it is superb. Out of curiousity (we's a Yorkshire badger) where do you get canned bangs at £12 / 100 ? We're paying £27 !

We know Paul at TVG. He's an official Armourer to the Sett and is therefore highly recommended, even to you bald monkeys.

What we are looking for on this thread is a round suitable for reaching out and touching Farmer Giles at up to 1000 yards...

I managed to shoot mine out at the 2800 round mark, this is about what I expected as I shoot a hottish load using the 123 grain smk and push it out at just over 3000fps shooting 12 or 22 rounds in rapid(ish) succession.
