Tikka M595 rail mounting holes

#1 Post by Hauptman »

Hi,

I finally got my grubbies on a long awaited .223 Tikka M595 TR conversion, and I want to fit a Weaver/Pic rail................the top of the reciever is flat, and there are 4 tapped holes, in my case, blanked off with 4 grub screws that are the wrong thread size. They go in easily, but are a bit chewed. The holes in the reciever look OK, however.
I ordered an EGW Tikka M595 rail from Midway (yes, I know, you were right, I should have listened........) sign01
After emailing them to ask about elevation, they replied that they were "25 MOA"....................well it wasn't. :cool2: :cool2:
When it finally arrived, mine was flat, EGW only do 0 or 20 MOA rails, and the supplied mounting screws didn't fit.
Which brings me finally to the point of this post: Can anyone tell me what size the holes in the Tikka M595 reciever actually are?
According to one source, they're 6 x 48, whatever that is. But if the supplied EGW screws ARE 6 x 48, then the holes are different.
Three of them go right through, so could be "modified", but the barrel thread can be seen when looking down the front one.
Any info would be appreciated. I want to use this b**ger at 1000 yds, so I really need all the MOA I can get.

Cant help with the thread sizes. When I had a 595 and i needed some extra elevation I used tikka opti lock bases and rings then machined 30 thou of the front base to give the desired slope.
If you are interested i may still have them buried under the bed somewhere.

I should have some 6x48 - I will need to check in the morning (PM to remind me!) The rail can be machined to 25 Minutes quite easily, as an example if the ring centres are 5.5" then machining a .040" to 0.000" taper will give 25 Minutes and .0449" to 0.000" gives 28 Minutes. Adjusting the fixings holes is not a huge issue either.

Thanks for your replies. There's not going to be a quick fix for this as I don't even know if the holes are standard 6 x 48. The grub screws that were used to blank the holes off are 3.3mm in diameter. The screws supplied with the rail are 3.1mm diam. They go in for 1/2 a turn then start to tighten.

Closest I have are 8x40 which are not close at 4,1mm ish OD. Brownells can supply the screws, I had some of a different size shipped over last month.

I just dug this up-hopefully it may help. If you look at the first of the #20's in the left hand column it states that the plugt screws for the receiver are M3.5 x 3. Not the easiest screw size to get hold of but it is one that is used in electrical components. I may be worth having a look at RS, Maplin or Farnell.

I'll try to get this round the right way as it's coming off the top off my nappa, some of the early tikka rifles came with metric threads, 590, 595, tikka then changed the threads to imperial to suit the U.S.A you can find both threads on these models. All later tikka rifles, t3 etc are metric.
If my memory is right ( not much hope) I have 2 metric 590 rifles and a imperial 595.

Apologies if I confused the issue!

I got a couple of M3.5 screws which have a thread pitch of 0.6mm. These go in smoothly for 1-1.5 turns then start to seize.

So I guess what I'm looking for is an imperial thread with an outside diameter < = 3.3mm..................

I decided to go with the easy option, send the rail back and use a set of rings that clamp on to the dovetails already on the receiver.
