MAS36 and AICS/Remington 7.62

Well oomans, we popped over to the range this morning to try out our latest acquisition: a MAS 36 we bought from Dromia of this parish. 'Twas a cold, crisp morning, -3 C and frosty on the firing point but no wind at all. Ideal conditions for those of us with fur coats. We were very nicely surprised by the MAS36. It felt very awkward to use, being a short rifle with a very odd bolt, but it was very accurate. We managed to group to under 3 inches which, for a military rifle, we were quite happy with. Most of our shots were grouping under 2 inches with an occasional flier that we called - it's an odd trigger too, almost down there with the Mosin Nagant. Despite those peculiarities, it's definitely minute of German capable. Shame the amphibians never hung around long enough to give it a proper try...

After shooting the MAS36 were offered a go on a nice 7.62x51 Remington 700 in an AICS stock. It's been very well put together with a heavy fluted barrel, a Socialist muzzle brake (it shares the woe evenly with both lanes on either side), a 10 round magazine and a very nice trigger. An exceedingly nice trigger in fact. It made an interesting contrast with the MAS36. Rounds fed smoothly, the rifle was a perfect fit to our frame, the recoil was quite tame and it was very economical on paper usage downrange: our rounds all went through the same hole.

I still fancy adding oneof these to my collection. Granted its' pig ugly and built by the French but as a little used, knock-about gun it can't be beaten.

I must say I bought one of those French things a few weeks back and have had a few trips to the range now with it. Despite the fact my best mate is seriously negative about it, ( in a 20series kind of way - hes only upset because one bit him! ) I am more than happy. It is accurate, and fun to shoot, once you overcome any bolt handle related woes anyway. Mine groups easily between 3 and 4 moa without too much operator input using ppu, and I achieved a 1 moa 3 shot group today although I admit this was more flukish good luck than skill. I expect that a 2 -3 moa grouping will be the norm once we really get used to each other.

For the price I reckon these are a great addition to the cabinet and well worth a look in.

We bought one to add to our collection of battle rifles and it makes a useful talking point. It combines elements of the Mauser and Lee bolts with P14 and Springfield sights, the Mosin Nagant bolt release and sundry other ideas from various rifles. In theory, it should have been the ultimate bolt action, magazine fed rifle but unfortunately, whoever tried to incorporate all these good ideas into one rifle didn't quite get the ergonomics right...

It's certainly an accurate rifle despite all that...

Beauty as they say is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I think youre still hurting from the nasty injury inflicted on you by a Mas while holidaying in the USA, and youre jealous that I managed to get one before you.........
